ISO 14001 is an internationally agreed upon standard that sets out the requirements for an environmental management system. It helps organizations improve their environmental performance through more efficient use of resources and reduction of waste, gaining a competitive advantage and the trust of stakeholders. ISO 14001:2015 is suitable for organizations of all types and sizes and can be integrated into any existing ISO management system along with other management systems standards like the new ISO 9001:2015 for quality management systems, which is due for release on September 23. Some of ISO 14001:2015’s key improvements include the increased prominence of environmental management within the organization’s strategic planning processes, greater input from leadership, and a stronger commitment to proactive initiatives that boost environmental performance.
ISO Acting Secretary-General Kevin McKinley said the newly revised ISO 14001:2015 reflects many changes in technology and what stakeholders expect of organizations.
“It is also a competitive advantage,” he said. “ISO 14001 is something that organizations can use to distinguish themselves from their competition, and in many cases also providing financial advantage, helping organizations to realize efficiencies and improve performance.”
According to ISO, ISO 14001:2015 is the culmination of work done by 121 expert members of technical committee ISO/TC 207/SC 1 for environmental development, which is led by BSI, ISO member for the United Kingdom, representing multiple stakeholder groups from 88 countries.
ISO 14001:2015 is available in the United States from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), which is offering a discounted Environmental Management Package that combines environmental management systems guidance standards for a savings of 28 percent.
